Although she spent most of her life in her native Georgia, Mitchell attended Smith College in Massachusetts in 1918 for one year. Although controversial for its sanitized portrayal of slavery, as well as omnipresent racial stereotypes, “Gone With the Wind” is still one of the most popular American novels of all time.
